In fact, they’ve earned a special status since April 2014, highlighting their importance and ensuring their quality. Together, these seasons contribute to Maharashtra’s massive production of 692,000 tonnes of oranges annually.
2. Madhya Pradesh (237,000 tonnes)
Next up is Madhya Pradesh, particularly the Chhindwara district, which is home to the famous Satpuda Oranges. Producing around 237,000 tonnes annually, these oranges are known for their thin skin and sweet taste, making them popular with larger companies. With approximately 25,000 hectares dedicated to orange farming, this region not only supplies the domestic market but also exports oranges to countries like Bangladesh.
3. Assam (83,000 tonnes)
Assam comes in third, producing 83,000 tonnes of oranges every year. The state’s climate, characterized by its rainy weather, gives its oranges a distinctive sweet and sour taste, unlike those grown in central India. Assam’s oranges play a vital role in fulfilling the local demand and supporting the livelihoods of many small-scale farmers in the region.
4. Rajasthan (48,000 tonnes)
Rajasthan might be known for its arid landscape, but it still manages to produce 48,000 tonnes of oranges annually. Local farmers have adapted their methods to grow a hardy variety of orange that thrives in the dry soil and requires less water. These oranges have a tougher skin, making them ideal for transportation over long distances. Growing oranges in Rajasthan has helped sustain farming in otherwise challenging conditions.
5. Meghalaya (37,000 tonnes)
Rounding out the top five is Meghalaya, which produces 37,000 tonnes of oranges each year. The state’s hilly terrain and cooler climate create the perfect conditions for growing a unique variety of oranges. These high-altitude oranges have their own distinct flavor and texture, adding diversity to the orange varieties produced across India.
