Company history
Godrej Group, founded by Ardeshir Godrej in 1897 with his brother Pirojsha B Birjorji Godrej. In order to compete with British imports, the company began by producing high-quality locks. Godrej launched springless locks in the year 1902 and then introduced Chavi, the world’s very first vegetable oil soap in 1918. In the 1920s and 1930s, the company began to produce safes, furniture and typewriters.
In 1958, Godrej began diversifying into the manufacture of refrigerators. This was followed in 1960 by the production of steel furniture and consumer durables. Godrej expanded its product range in the 1970s and 1980s to include agro-based goods, real estate chemicals, aerospace defence and engineering. Godrej Consumer Products, a division of Godrej Group, was founded in 1993.
Godrej was a major player on the real estate market in the 2000s through its subsidiary Godrej Properties, and agricultural products via Godrej Agrovet. Godrej Group restructured in 2024 into Godrej Enterprises Group, and Godrej Industries Group.
Current status
Godrej Enterprises Group operates in the aerospace, defence and energy sectors. It also has a presence in advanced engineering, furniture, home appliances and home appliances. Godrej Industries Group operates in multiple industries, including agriculture, chemicals and FMCG.
Godrej Enterprises Group (GEG) and Godrej Industries Group (GIG) are present in over 60 countries around the world. GEG reported a turnover of Rs. GIG’s capitalisation was $27.5 billion by 2024-25.
